MUARA, Monday, 19 February 2024 – JS SHIMAKAZE and JS SUZUNAMI of the Japan Maritime Self Defence Force (JMSDF) departed the Muara Commercial Wharf after a goodwill visit to Brunei Darussalam from 17 to 19 February 2024 led by Captain Yanagihara Makoto, Commander Training Division One, JMSDF.
The ships’ arrival was received with a welcoming ceremony on 17 February 2024 by the Royal Brunei Navy (RBN), led by Commander Malek Fadillah bin Pehin Dato Juragan Laila Diraja Dato Seri Pahlawan Hj Kefli, RBN, Assistant Chief of Staff Operations, as they arrived at Muara Commercial Wharf. Also present were His Excellency MAEDA Toru, Ambassador of Japan to Brunei Darussalam, Commander Ishikawa Kyoshi, Defence Attaché of Japan Accredited to Brunei Darussalam, and staff of the Embassy of Japan in Brunei Darussalam. Upon receiving both ships, the welcoming party were invited onboard JS SHIMAKAZE for a ship tour and a luncheon for attending officers.
This Goodwill Visit also featured a beach cleaning campaign. This collaborative effort demonstrated the shared commitment to preserving the marine environment and promoting sustainable practices. The visit then culminated in a cocktail reception, where RBN senior officers and officers from both countries gathered to celebrate the successful completion of the goodwill visit.
Upon completing the Goodwill Visit, JS SHIMAKAZE and JS SUZUNAMI departed on 19 February 2024. Their departure was accompanied by a farewell ceremony organised by the Royal Brunei Navy (RBN) led by Commander Ade Roddiane bin Hj Rosdi, RBN, CO KDB DARULAMAN. The RBN reaffirms its commitment to strengthening its bilateral ties with JMSDF, enhancing interoperability towards the goal of cooperation at sea and wishes both JS SHIMAKAZE and JS SUZUNAMI a smooth journey to her next port of call.
