CHANGI NAVAL BASE, Friday, 05 May 2023– Two (2) Royal Brunei Navy (RBN) officers along with the RBN International Liaison Officer (ILO) attached to the International Fusion Centre (IFC) attended the biennial Maritime Information Sharing Exercise (MARISX) from Wednesday, 03 May 2023 to 05 May 2023. The exercise was organised by Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) in conjunction with IMDEX Asia 2023 which involved about 100 personnel from 43 different countries. The attendees are comprised of international liaison officers (ILO) based in Singapore, members of shipping companies and other navies which represents subject matter experts on maritime threats in the regional and international maritime fora.

IFC Real-time Information-sharing system (IRIS) was used to provide a common platform for the collection, management, and sharing of real-time data on vessel movements, environmental conditions, and other relevant information between International Fusion Centre (IFC) and regional maritime enforcement entities. The IFC provided an overview on the overall regional maritime situational awareness which was followed by a series of Table-top exercises (TTX). The comprehensive TTXs addressed current and new maritime threats through coordination between countries in areas such as Environmental Security, Maritime Cyber Security and Irregular Human Migration at sea whilst maintaining relevance with persistent threats such as Maritime terrorism, Robbery and piracy at sea.

Maritime case studies were delivered by guest speakers from various countries which highlighted the importance of effective communications and coordination between stakeholders in ensuring a safe and secure seas beneficial for all.

Royal Brunei Navy aligns with IFC’s view and effort in maintaining communications through allocated ILO in IFC for better coordination in building shared maritime awareness within the region.
