RBN SAILING TEAM REPRESENTS THE RBAF SPORT COUNCIL IN THE INAUGURAL BRUNEI DARUSSALAM YACHTING ASSOCIATION (BDYA) SAILING CHAMPIONSHIP 2019

SERASA, Friday, 20th September to Sunday, 22nd September 2019 – The Inaugural BDYA Sailing Championship 2019 was held at the Serasa Beach. A total of 50 registered participants from Brunei Darussalam, Sabah and Sarawak as well as Peninsular Malaysia competed in this championship event, which was held from Friday, 20 September until Sunday, 22 September 2019.  BDYA President Dato Paduka Haji Idris bin Haji Abas explained the objective of the sailing championship is "to promote water sports in Brunei Darussalam, especially for the youth. This is our mission. In the future, we are planning to host roadshows and also encourage schools to establish their own sailing club."

The Opening Ceremony was held on Saturday, 21 September 2019 at the BDYA Clubhouse. Present as the guest of honour to officiate the event was Yang Berhormat Major General (Retired) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Aminuddin Ihsan 

bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin, The Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports. Also present for that event was First Admiral Dato Seri Pahlawan Haji Othman bin Haji Suhaili @ Suhaily, The Commander of the Royal Brunei Navy.

Eight sailors from the Royal Brunei Navy Sailing Team represented the RBAF Sports Council in this inaugural event. The sailing team participated in all the races during the event and contested in two categories, the Laser Radial category and Laser Standard category. The race span over three days and a total of six races were competed, including one long course - marathon (approximately 18km). Each of the races provided points and the total accumulation of all the points from each races was used for the ranking of the championship in each category.

This is the first time the RBAF Sports Council has participated in an International Yachting Event and our sailors have done us proud in both categories. For the Laser Standard category, 1126 Lieutenant Junior Grade Amirul Azwan bin Haji Dullah was placed 2nd in the Laser Standard Category and achieved 2nd Men's Overall for the event and 52188 Ordinary Rate Mohammad Nur Faezul Hafiz bin Kamarul Zaman managed to get 3rd place in the Laser Standard Category. Meanwhile for the Laser Radial category, 15734 Leading Hand Pengiran Yusrizal bin Pengiran Yunus has managed to get 3rd place. This marks a great achievement for our sailors as we have shown our ability to compete with international athletes from overseas as well.
