MUARA, Friday 13 September 2019 – The three-day Exercise Planning Conference (EPC) for Exercise HORNBILL 27/19 between the Royal Brunei Navy (RBN) and the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) came to close today at the Multinational Coordination Centre (MNCC), Muara Naval Base.

The EPC was hosted by the RBN and lead by Commander Hj Edy Jofren bin Pehin Datu Penglima Colonel (Rtd.) Dato Paduka Hj Abdul Jalil, Commanding Officer KDB DARULEHSAN. The RMN was represented by Commander Clarence Anak Ruman, the Assistant Chief of Staff Admin, Eastern Fleet Headquarters, RMN, as the Head of Delegation for the RMN.

The planning conference provided a platform to enable both parties to raise issues and discuss the details towards the conduct of the Bilateral Exercise HORNBILL 27/19. This exercise is scheduled to be held both in Brunei Darussalam and Malaysian waters. The concept of this year’s edition of Exercise HORNBILL will revolve around Maritime Security, which includes professional exchanges and developing interoperability between both navies in countering non-traditional threats such as the conduct of boarding exercises, gunnery exercises and cross-deck helicopter landings. The exercise will also subsequently see the conduct of several interaction programmes between both navies throughout the duration of the exercise.

During the two-day planning conference, details of participating ships, berthing arrangements and general logistical requirements were discussed. The EPC concluded with the signing of the meeting minutes earlier today. Bilateral exercises between both RBN and RMN has been established since 1985, initially called BRUMAL Setia Exercise, before being renamed Exercise HORNBILL.
