MAKATI, REPUBLIC OF THE PHILIPPINES, 17 February 2025 – A Royal Brunei Navy (RBN) officer recently participated in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) Protection Course, facilitated by the UK Royal Navy Maritime Warfare School. Held in Makati, Philippines, from 17 to 21 February 2025, the course brings together representatives from ASEAN navies, reinforcing regional cooperation in maritime security.
The program covers key aspects of EEZ protection, including international maritime law, enforcement mechanisms, and border security practices. Participants gain expertise in fishery protection, countering piracy and armed robbery, search and rescue operations, maritime law enforcement, customs and anti-smuggling operations, and immigration control.
Additionally, the course provides insights into security frameworks such as the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code, the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS), and oil spill response strategies. A key focus is ensuring the safety of merchant shipping during crises and conflicts, equipping participants with the necessary skills to address emerging maritime security challenges.
With an emphasis on intelligence gathering, operational planning, and strategic response coordination, the course enhances interoperability among ASEAN naval forces. It also strengthens partnerships with the UK Royal Navy, demonstrating a collective commitment to addressing regional maritime security concerns.
RBN’s participation underscores its dedication to enhancing operational capabilities and contributing to regional maritime stability. It reflects Brunei’s ongoing efforts in defense diplomacy and strategic cooperation within the ASEAN framework, ensuring the protection of national interests and the preservation of maritime security in the region.
