Bandar Seri Begawan, Sunday, 6 May 2018 – His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam consented to participate in the mass recreational cycling event “Riadah Berbasikal Keluarga Harmoni” held in the capital this morning. The event was held in conjunction with Brunei Darussalam’s 7th National Family Day 2018 celebration.
Also present were His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and other members of the Royal family.
Among the participating cyclists were 545 personnel from the Ministry of Defence and Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF) including their families, led by Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Retired) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof, Minister of Defence II.
Also taking part were Major General Pengiran Dato Seri Pahlawan Aminan bin Pengiran Haji Mahmud, Commander of the RBAF, Captain (Retired) Dato Paduka Abd Rahman bin Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Haji Bakar, RBN, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, Service Commanders, Deputy Permanent Secretaries and senior officers and staff from the Ministry of Defence and RBAF.
The 11.49-kilometre cycling route started off from Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien, trailing through major roads such as Jalan Pretty, Jalan Eizabeth II, Jalan Masjid Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien, Jalan Kianggeh, Jalan Sekolah, Jalan Kumbang Pasang, Jalan Gadong, Jalan Perdana Menteri, Jalan Stadium, Jalan Pertahanan, Jalan Lapangan Terbang, Jalan Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien; and back to Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien as the finishing line.
Another side event that the RBAF took part in was a friendly tug-of-war match against the Royal Brunei Police Force.
This year’s theme ‘My Loving Family, Glorious Country’ highlights the importance of a solid and harmonious family institution towards shaping a society and nation that is cohesive and peaceful. This year’s focus will revolve around the issue of drug abuse and ways to address its implications that threatens the stability and well-being of families and society.
